I think that part varies a LOT. (I am definitely not in it for the Great American Novel - for me it's a good exercise in Shitty First Drafts and lets me get out some of the ideas that seem bigger than the short story, which is my natural habitat, too.) You've got a LOT on your plate right now. Short stories are awesome, and as long as you keep writing them I'll keep reading them. :D It’s not for everyone, and it’s only as good as what any given person wants to get out of it.
